MARCH & APRIL 2022 NEWSLETTER

April 28, 2022

It's been a busy start to the year! This past March, several MVLF mentors and staff attended the "Mentoring and Re-Engagement: Coaching Re-Imagined" summit hosted by The Mentoring Collaborative of Montgomery County. The summit featured keynote speakers Donnie Evege, CEO – OH20 Transformation Coach, and Evelyn Magley, CEO – The Basketball League. The day also included breakout room workshops including Coaching Stories by Michael Carter; Parenting Reimagined by Amber Harris; Triumphs over Challenges by Shane Carter and Mentoring vs Supervisor by Taneah Matthews. We're thrilled to have new insights and skills to utilize while enhancing our mentoring partnerships in 2022!

Mentoring Central - Success Story

This past February, MVLF was thrilled to be featured by Mentoring Central for our utilization of the Substance of Change: Building Assets in Mentees Affected by Substance Misuse course to train mentors in our network.
Mentoring Central writes, "As a member of the Leadership Foundations global network, MVLF was offered the opportunity to participate in a pilot program with Mentoring Central to utilize the Substance of Change: Building Assets in Mentees Affected by Substance Misuse course.

Mentoring Central created the course to train mentors in a variety of different ways to support their mentees who are living in high-risk communities and who may have a family member or themselves be recovering from, misusing, or at-risk for misusing opioids or other drugs. The course offers research and practitioner-informed content for training mentors about opioids, the effects of opioids on the lives of mentees, and specific strategies they may use to support their mentees.

With the successful completion of the pilot program under their belts, MVLF plans to roll out the training to a larger group of mentors in the spring of 2022. MVLF has also identified schools and teachers who may be interested in the course as well."

MVLF & Dayton Public Schools - Mentoring Partnership

MVLF is thrilled about our new mentoring partnership with Dayton Public School's, Edison Elementary School! In early April, mentors began meeting with their mentees after school. Coming up, MVLF will begin pairing mentors and mentees for the 2022-2023 school year! Several of our partner schools are looking forward to our current mentors returning, but there is still a need to develop new mentoring partnerships this Fall with our new partner schools. Training for new mentors will occur Summer through Fall, 2022.

Communities thrive when we connect, collaborate, and catapult transformative change in the same direction.

Scripture says:

In the same way, a movement of people partnered together to change communities is not easily stopped. We want to transform the Miami Valley, to see it go from brokenness to wholeness, from isolated to hopeful, and we need partners to help us make that happen.

We need partners who are like-minded, willing to stick it out, and ready to celebrate the victories of hope both big and small. Whether you partner with us with your time, your treasure, or your talent — or all three — we eagerly await hearing from you and connecting you to this movement of partnered people pursuing a better tomorrow for the Miami Valley.

You need not be a hero to be a partner.
You just need to be willing to be a part of something bigger than yourself.
